Each of these practices teaches me something I bring back to design — patience from the pen, composition from the canvas, choreography from the sky, discipline from the lab.
The discipline of the qalam.
Arabic calligraphy is geometry that breathes. Every stroke has a measured angle and pressure; every space between letters is composed, not left over. Years at the bamboo pen taught me that beautiful systems are the ones with the most discipline hidden inside.
Colour, texture, balance.
Painting is where I let intuition lead. The canvas is the only place I let the math wait, and it always comes back stronger for it.
Form, rhythm, negative space.
Hand-lettering in Latin scripts trains the same muscles as type design — pressure, cadence, the courage to leave the page empty where it should be.
The sky as a system.
I read about cockpit philosophy and crew resource management for fun. The aviation industry is the closest thing we have to a working theory of choreographed humans + machines.
Proofs as poetry.
I keep a notebook of elegant proofs the way other people keep recipes. Number theory and topology, mostly.
Laws I trust.
Quantum, relativity, fluids — physics keeps me humble. The universe is a beautifully constrained design system.
